Find equine professionals near you. For example:

Q: How can I find John Lyons horse trainers near me in San Antonio, TX?
A: Individual listings indicate whether each horseman is certified by famous trainers such as John Lyons, Richard Shrake and Pat Parelli—or if they're "independent operators." Click on the links in the left column, "Texas" in this case, for a city-by-city listing of pro horse trainers near you.

Q: How do I locate a good horse trainer in Indiana?
A: Clicking on "Indiana" will bring you to a directory of horse training professionals in Indiana. Make sure you ask for references - and call those prior clients before trying out any trainer. Remember, more often than not, saving a few pennies up front (on a fly-by-night so-called "pro") will cost you in the long run. How much do broken ribs cost these days in terms of hospital bills and lost work?

An excerpt:

On Day One our horses woke up to a whole new barnyard dynamic when we stopped "reacting" and started "acting." We practiced a very natural way to begin putting ourselves back in charge when we began expecting our horses to clear out of our path, to move obligingly when asked and to keep their two eyes on us when they do so. We said clearly "From now on, things are going to be different" and we opened the door for these later lessons. Once we had their attention, then, on Day Two, we learned to move those hips back to the mounting block as sort of a quick-fix (albeit not necessarily a long-lasting one), but a fix nonetheless that allowed us to mount up between now and the time we finish this course. Today we'll build in longer lasting changes when we make another clear statement: "Sure, you can move - but it's a whole lot easier to stand." Today's (ground)work involves understanding and employing an easy principle: "I cannot make a horse stop moving… but I sure as the devil can keep him moving." And because I know that horses would far rather stand peacefully than earn a sweat, I can make lemonade from lemons by flipping things around and channeling the horse's movement into productive training. When it dawns on him that every time he moves off he gets put to work, it isn't long before he starts thinking "I'm going to freeze like this and maybe he'll (the human), maybe he'll forget I'm here." So, new rule: Henceforth, when confronted with a horse that won't stand still, whether riding or on the ground (at the mounting block, for fly spraying, for tacking up, etc.) put your horse to work intensely; really make him think twice the next time.
