An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
Instead, work on your "go forward" cue. Get as close as you can to the wash rack with the foal relaxed. Stand near his left shoulder (theoretically out of kicking range), take the lead line in your left hand (just under the clip), turn and raise the dressage whip toward his hip with your right hand. Hold the whip over his rear and further suggest forward motion by applying a light pressure to the lead rope with your left hand. Pause a beat with your arm outstretched, your body language suggesting "Walk forward." If you get no movement for a beat, kiss. If still nothing...
