An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
You must develop the ability to shoo your horse away from where you are standing. By now the horse will have begun to understand that being near you means he gets to chill out. However, allowing your horse to ignore your cues to move off (and away from you) is a very dangerous situation. It is not cute. This grows to be a very, very dangerous rule infraction. Horses allowed to get away with this nonsense are likely to step right over you or your neighbor's 3 year-old son should they become startled, angry, or otherwise pushed. (And, yes, I'm talking about that sweet old horse who'd never hurt a fly.) They are screaming to you "You are not the boss of me" with their actions. Now, go back and reread from the beginning of this paragraph. Trust my experience here: You must have the ability to send your horse away. You must respect your own zero-tolerance policy. You won't destroy any bond you've created; you'll be maintaining necessary respect. If you can call your horse but not send him back away, you've only got half the puzzle.
